Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai means in Maasai language “mountain of God”, and it’s the climb that we recommend for a 3 days experience. Start your ascension in the lowlands of Lake Natron, up to the summit of an active volcano, 2.962 meters above the sea level.

Day 1

Lake Natron

Starting at your hotel around 10:00 am, we will drive to Lake Natron, located 70 miles off Arusha in the Rift Valley. This lake alkaline water are inhospitable for most wildlife, but it’s the primary breeding ground for lesser flamingoes in East Africa, so flocks or these birds will be easy for you to spot. Enjoy your day around the lake and rest before your midnight summit attempt.

Day 2

Ol Doinyo Lengai (2.962 meters, 8 to 10 hours)

Your hike will start right after midnight. The ascent will take from 5 to 7 hours of considerable effort, but after it you will be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise and a 360º view over the Lake Natron and its surroundings. After a descent of 2 or 3 hours, return to your accommodation for resting and relaxing.

Day 3

After breakfast a Maasai guide will walk you to the lake southern shores across the mudflats to see the lesser flamingo flocks and enjoy the beautiful lake scenery with the impressive view of Ol Doinyo Lengai on the background.
