Kilimanjaro Machame Route.

Machame Route, also known as the Whiskey route, it’s in the present days a popular choice for trekkers for its spectacular views and variety of habitats, but it’s also the most difficult route. Recommended to experienced climbers only.

You will be warmly welcomed by one of our guides at your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, from where you will be taken to your accommodation in Arusha.

Day 1

Machame Camp (3.010 m, 6 to 7 hours duration)

Start your trip around 9:00 am in your hotel, and after a short climbing briefing, depart to Kilimanjaro National Park entrance: Machame Gate (1.800 m). Your hike will start going through the rainforest, where you will be able to enjoy the lush vegetation as well as several species of monkeys and birds. Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp (3.010 m)

Day 2

Shira Camp (3.845 m)

Right after breakfast, continue with a moderate trek towards Shira Camp, the second highest altitude camp (3.845 m). The trekking is not very difficult, but you might fell the changes of altitude. On this day you will leave the rainforest and see for the first time the stunning views of the Shira Plateau. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

Day 3

Lava Tower (4.630 m) – Baranco Camp (3.960 m) 6 to 7 hours duration

Start your way in the morning towards the key point of the route: Lava Tower. This part of the route has a lot of ascents and descents that end at a camp at over 4.600 m, where in order to acclimate to the altitude you will have to spend 1-2 hours there, reason why that’s the place selected for lunch. After that, descend to Baranco Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Barafu Camp (4.730 m, 8 to 10 hours duration)

Starting early, you will first summit Barranco Wall, a short hike (around 1 hour) of low difficulty. After the climb and some rest, continue with a more difficult hike to Karanga Camp, where you will have a warm lunch and a bit more resting time, before continuing your ascension to Barafu Camp, where you will dinner and overnight.

Day 5

Summit Attempt (5.895 m) – Mweka Camp (3.080 m) 10 to 12 hours duration

Wake up at midnight for having tea and biscuits, and start your summit attempt, so you can reach the Uhuru peak (5.895 m) in time for sunrise, which will definitely be a unique experience. After reaching the summit you can also descent to the nearest glacier if desired. Return to Barafu and after a 2 hour rest continue to Mweka Camp for relaxing, dinner and overnight.

Day 6

Arusha (1.400 m, 5 to 6 hours duration)

After a warm breakfast, head back to Mweka Gate (1.650 m) to meet your group. You will receive the congratulations and commemorative certificates in order, and transfer back to your accommodation in Arusha.
