3 Days Mount Meru Trekking

Mount Meru, an exceptional active volcano reaching 14,980 feet (4,565 meters) that is the second highest peak of Tanzania. Starting in the lowlands of Arusha National Park, the scenery changes from verdant forest to desolate rocky slopes, when approaching the summit; you will enjoy an incredible hiking experience along the crest of the crater rim, with spectacular and unique views of Mount Kilimanjaro. This trek is geared towards hikers that prefer less crowds and a challenging ascent.

    Arrival

    Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our guide that will drive you to your accommodation in Arusha where you will be able to relax after a long journey.

  • Day 2

    Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

    Hiking duration: 5 to 7 hours We will pick you up at your hotel around 9:00am, having a short climbing info briefing and then departure to Momella gate in Arusha National Park where will start the hike. While the porters will organize and pack your belongings, you and your guide will register to the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA) and then begin your ascent. The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; you should expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalos, and some elephants with a bit of luck. Due to the high possibility of spotting wildlife an armed ranger, hired by the National Park, will escort you for duration of the hike; once you will arrive at the camp Miriakamba Hut the chef will prepare a lovely dinner that you will be able to enjoy in front of a beautiful sunset then overnight.

  • Day 3

    Niriakamba to Saddle Hut (3500m)

    Hiking duration: 3 to 5 hours After breakfast, you will start ascending up the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the impressive Ash Tray. After hot lunch at Saddle Hut you can make a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for superb views just before sunset. You will be served an early dinner for an ample rest before your midnight summit attempt.

  • Day 4

    Sumit Attempt (4565m) - Momella Gate to Arusha

    Hiking duration: 10 to 12 hours Your guide will wake you up around 00:30am for tea and biscuits and you will begin your summit attempt at 1:30am. The trail starts on a steep climb to Rhino Point (3.800m) and on to Cobra Point (4.350m). You will reach the summit of Mount Meru (4.565m) on time for the sunrise to enjoy a spectacular view of Kilimanjaro peak above the clouds. The final part of the climb is along a spectacular narrow ridge line between the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater. You will take a short rest and breakfast at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to the Miriakamba Hut where you will have lunch. After lunch we will begin our final descent to Momella gate. We will descend through forest and meadows where it is likely to spot wildlife. At the base of Mt. Meru, you will be greeted by our driver who will take you back to your accommodation in Arusha.
