What to Bring for a Safe & Successful Climb

Prepare Like a Pro: What to Pack for Kilimanjaro

As a professional Tanzanian trekking company, we’ve led thousands of successful summits on Mount Kilimanjaro. One of the most common questions we get from climbers is: What should I pack? The right gear can make the difference between an enjoyable climb and a tough struggle.

This guide gives you our essential, field-tested Kilimanjaro packing list, broken down by category, with tips straight from our certified guides.

1. Essential Clothing: Layering Is Everything

Temperatures on Kilimanjaro can range from tropical to arctic. You’ll need to dress in layers so you can adapt as you ascend.

Base Layers (Moisture-Wicking)

  • 2-3 thermal tops (synthetic or merino wool)
  • 1-2 thermal leggings
  • 3-4 Quick-dry underwear

Insulating Layers

  • Fleece jacket or pullover
  • Lightweight down or synthetic puffy jacket
  • Insulated pants for summit night

Outer Layers (Waterproof & Windproof)

  • Gore-Tex or equivalent rain jacket or rain cape
  • Rain pants with side zippers
  • Windproof shell layer

Trekking Clothes

  • 2 pairs of moisture-wicking trekking pants
  • 2-3 short/long-sleeve synthetic shirts
  • 1 pair of warm camp clothes (sweatpants, hoodie; to sleep in)

2. Footwear: Protect Your Foundation

Your feet do the hard work—take care of them.

  • Broken-in waterproof hiking boots (high ankle support)
  • Comfortable camp shoes or sandals
  • 2-3 pairs of wool or synthetic hiking socks
  • 1–2 pairs of liner socks (helps prevent blisters; make sure you pack what you are most comfortable in)

Pro Tip: Never wear brand-new boots on the mountain.

3. Head & Hand Protection: Stay Warm Where It Matters Most

  • Warm beanie or fleece hat
  • Balaclava, thin scarf or buff for cold and dust
  • Sunglasses with UV protection (glacier-ready)
  • Heavy-duty insulated gloves or mittens for summit night

4. Sleeping Gear: Comfort at Camp

  • Four-season sleeping bag (rated to at least -10°C / 14°F)
  • Sleeping bag liner (adds warmth, keeps bag clean)
  • Inflatable or foam sleeping mat (provided by us, but bring extra for comfort)
  • Travel pillow (optional but nice)

We offer high-quality rental sleeping bags and mats upon request.

5. Daypack & Duffel: Carry the Right Load

  • Duffel Bag (90–100L): Carried by porters (max 15 kg/33 lbs when fully packed)
  • Rain covers for both packs
  • Packing cubes or dry bags for organization

6. Hydration & Nutrition Tools

  • 2-3L hydration bladder (CamelBak or similar)
  • 1-2 reusable water bottles (insulated for cold)
  • Electrolyte tablets or hydration salts
  • High-energy snacks (nuts, energy bars, dried fruit)
